Baroni's Pizza Reviews

Reviews

All my life I have had only chain-store pizzas.  I was amazed at the difference a handmade New York pizza can make.  I will never eat anything else when I want pizza.  You guys have converted me.

We could have chosen a pizza pie, some pasta, maybe a calzone, stromboli or the antipasto, and somehow we felt we wouldn't have been cheated, that no matter the order, Baroni's would have come through.

Situated in the Ashley Crossing shopping center at the corner of Paul Cantrell Boulevard and Magwood Road, the pizza and pasta restaurant showcases its appetite for a bevy of Italian treats and a few Americanized dishes. It's been around since 1996 or so, and geez, it upsets us that it took that long for our palates (and noggins) to register the restaurant.

The menu divvies up the pizzas into red and white categories. The reds use a traditional pizza sauce, while the white pies contain a garlic glaze, alfredo sauce or extra virgin olive oil.

We dove into the (white) Riviera, a plum pie decked in fresh spinach, marinated artichokes, black olives, tomatoes, feta and mozzarella cheeses. Fired in a stone-baked oven, it came out buttery, fluffy and finely baked, the chewy crust firm enough to support the load. A 10-inch small is $12.49, a 14-inch medium $16.49, a 16-inch large $18.49, and an 18-inch extra large costs $20.49.

Pick a sub, wrap or gyro from the sandwich board. We'd push for the Big Pappa ($6.59), which is a large Italian sub, or the S.P.O. ($6.59), whole link Italian sausage with grilled onions and peppers "straight from the streets of New York."

Just be sure to sub the garlic knots for chips; no additional cost is necessary.

One word: Philly Cheesesteak Pizza! OK, maybe that was a few words, but wow, that was the best pizza I’ve ever had. Your Philly sub is the best. To have it on a pizza was, well…a slice of heaven.
